If you’re tired of looking like you’ve just spent the night in the studio, then you’re in luck: there’s a new way to stay stylish.
For the past few years, the beauty industry has been getting pretty good at designing clothes that are both flattering and functional.
A lot of women are looking to their favourite designers and the beauty brand brands they trust to create beautiful, functional clothes for them.
And for some of these brands, this is the first time they’ve created clothes that look like they’ve been worn for a long time.
We spoke to fashion designer Stephanie Geddes about what she has learned over the past 10 years from working with some of the most well-known and influential brands in the industry.
What is the best piece of fashion advice you’ve ever received?
I was in a dressing room in the early 2000s and a model came up to me and said: ‘I’m so excited to meet you, you’re my favourite designer and you’ve got my heart!’
That was the first moment I’d ever experienced, and I thought, ‘wow, that’s pretty amazing’.
She was an amazing model, but she was an absolute inspiration.
That was how I felt about myself as a designer, and then when I started wearing a lot of clothes in the style I wanted to wear, I started to think, ‘this is what I want to wear.’
I think the biggest compliment I ever got from someone was from a friend, ‘I want to work with you because you’re amazing, you do the things you want to do and you’re beautiful’.
I think that’s the most important thing that I’ve learned from the business side of fashion.
What are some of your favourite pieces of design advice?
There are a few.
One, I think, is when you want something that’s functional, but not too functional.
You can always add more.
I think my favourite is the jacket that I wear in the film, and it’s not functional, it’s functional because I’ve been wearing it for 10 years.
I’m like: ‘This is what you’ve always wanted to be wearing.’
I always wanted a jacket that’s practical and wearable, and when I saw that one, I was like, ‘well, I can do that’.
I wanted it to have the ability to be worn by people who could also be in the same situation as me, or someone who was wearing a jacket I’m not sure I want anymore.
I’ve also got this piece of design, which is a pencil skirt, and the pencil skirt is like, it fits me in a lot better than the regular skirt.
I also really like the skirt with a belt, which I can wear for an event or for a wedding, because it’s just a great way to add something.
That’s one thing that really helped me out, and that’s how I got through those days when I was struggling.
When you’re struggling, you look at yourself in the mirror and say, ‘what the hell am I wearing?’
You look at other people and think: ‘that’s not me, I need to change.’
What is one thing you’ve learned about fashion design that’s going to make your day better?
The most important piece of advice that I got from an expert, I’ve worked with a lot in the fashion industry, is to just stay true to yourself.
You’re not going to be successful in this industry unless you can stay true.
That has helped me in everything that I do, whether it’s making sure that I look good or I can work on my design skills or I’ve started working on my clothes.
I can’t help but think that there’s always a certain style that suits me and that I want.
If I don’t have that style in my wardrobe, I’m going to end up looking a little different than I want, because I have to have that to wear.
What advice would you give someone looking to get into the fashion business?
I think it’s important to make sure that you have all the tools you need, and not just what you need to do a project.
For example, you can have the best product and the best team, but if you don’t know how to work together, you won’t be able to get it done.
If you have to be the person who comes up with the idea, you will not get it.
The only thing that can really help you is to always be working with people who you trust.
When I’m talking to people, I say: ‘do you have a problem?’
If they’re like, yes, you should talk to someone.
If they don’t want to talk to you, then don’t talk to them.
The thing I love most about the industry is the fact that it allows you to see how things work and what can go wrong.
